The Benefits of Using a Food Diary
A food diary helps you to catch those items that you would otherwise miss. Imagine a typical day. You get up in the morning and have breakfast. In the car to work, you drink a cup of coffee. You have a snack around 10 and then lunch around noon. By two, you are grabbing some snack from your desk and then you nibble on something on the way home from work. These are all calories and even though they may seem insignificant calories, they add up.
When you are using a food diary, though, you are able to catch all of the small snacks that you otherwise would not. So, what are the benefits of this? The biggest benefit is that you can clearly see what you are actually consuming, not what you remember eating. Further, you can keep track of portion size better, which makes calorie counting far easier to do.
If you have yet to start a food diary, try it for just a few days. You are more conscious of what you eat when you are writing it down. In fact, for some people, just having the diary is enough to help them to avoid eating all of those extra snacks.
